A Reason to Retire in Mexico: Winter Will Kill You, Literally
by Ron Morgan
You can never plan too early for a winter getaway, or even better, a permanent escape to a warmer climate. And in case you forgot:
– Winter is NOT your best friend
– It is NOT a fashion show with its layers of utility-inspired clothing
– Its only real purpose is to kill you, including your body, your spirit, and your pocketbook.
So, plan ahead.
Even the fine folks at the BBC, Reuters and Forbes want you to avoid winter’s deathly grip, in particular as it relates to snow shoveling. According to cold-weather experts at Health Canada – in a study conducted in Quebec – “60% of deaths and hospital admissions due to heart attack were in men, most commonly seen the day after a snowfall”
And Stanford University goes even further in this older study, suggesting that cold weather – generally speaking – is a total bummer. It’ll shorten your life through car accidents, snow shoveling and exposure, aka freezing to death.
“So, If Winter Kills, Does Warm Weather Prolong Life?” you ask?
The short answer, yes. The Stanford study signals that mortality rates actually decrease as temperatures increase. And more recent findings argue that the beach in particular has a positive effect on your brain, heart and body.
In a study published by Michigan State University, researchers concluded that a combination of the ocean’s undulating wave sounds, the blue sky and water, and reduced sensory stimuli calms the nerves, soothes the body and promotes creative thought.
Lora Fleming, researcher at Exeter University, adds that this is nothing new; “doctors were prescribing trips to the shore or visits to “bathing hospitals” — special clinics that offered seawater bath treatments — as early as the 18th century. But only recently have scientists begun studying the ocean’s health benefits experimentally”
The Other Winter Bummer: Money (or Lack Thereof)
Not only does winter offer the inconvenience of an early death, it’s expensive – the wardrobe and accessories, snow tires, shovels, snow blowers, snow clearing services, driveway salt, heating bills, window seal kits, and so on.
Which leads us to the other big stress: MONEY, or lack thereof. According to the American Psychological Association, money is the top cause of stress in America. And in winter it’s in shorter supply.
Mexico to the Rescue, Again
Given that Mexico has a favorable money exchange rate, low property values and low cost of living, your Canadian or U.S. dollar will carry you three to five times further.
And a recent article in Huffington Post lays out in plain language why Mexico is more affordable than ever, offering a simple breakdown on what to expect when buying property, paying for services, and support.
So, fine reader, what are you waiting for? Do your yourself a favor, or warn your stubborn, winter-loving friends. Forward this article and remind them “winter ain’t a fashion show, and it will kill you”.
Plan ahead. And move to Mexico.
