First a gay professional football player. Now DirecTV is reaching out to gay fans of the NFL.
A surprise commercial by the huge satellite service was aired on NFL's Kickoff game between the Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks on September 4, 2014. Will this be the start of a great gay NFL season?
Maybe it is not a coincidence this tasteful gay-themed commerical was played before a Packers game, given the supportive nature of former Green Bay head coach Vince Lomardi, who was an early champion for gay players (see the GAYPV story here).
In the commercial, one of the actors is wearing a Dallas Cowboys jersey. Michael Sam, the first openly-gay NFL player was recently picked up by the Texas team after not making the final roster for the St. Louis Rams. He had been a seventh-round Rams choice during the 2014 draft.
The topic of the rivalry in the commercial is NY Giants vs. Dallas Cowboys (one of the actors in the commercial is wearing a Dallas Cowboys jersey). The Giants had a guard named Roy Simmons from 1979 to 1982 who came out publicly on The Phil Donahue Show in 1992, after his career was over. Simmons died in February 2014.
